why are rugged laptops so big?

i find no reason for there bulkiness.

    you find no reason for their bulkiness?
    Padding.

    the only reason these machines can stand water, heat, shock, sand and more is because of all the padding and sealants built into the box. Try doing some of this stuff in the link provided to a normal "thin" notebook.
