Laptop Computers – Questions from College Student?
I am entering Fall ‘07 and beginning the great laptop search. I have done some in-store looking, but the only brands that I really know of are HP and Dell and I would like to know about other lesser known brands.
First off, here is what my university recommends:
> Processor Type IBM / Compatible Intel Pentium Processor
> Processor Speed 2Ghz
> RAM 512MB
> Hard Drive 40 GB
> Display 14.1" or larger SXGA TFT Display w/32MB of Video RAM
> Operating Systems Windows XP Professional
> 10/100 Base-T Mini-PCI Ethernet Adapter (3Com is preferred)
> Adapter Capable of Connecting to a 802.11b Wireless Network (Wi-Fi Certified Card)
Personally, I am looking for a laptop that is rugged and won’t physically fall apart. I’ll take workmanship over performance advantages (as long as they meet the requirements listed above). The only game that I really must be able to run on this laptop is Flight Simulator X – Deluxe Edition (which follows the listed system requirements).

You cannot go wrong with an IBM Thinkpad. I own one and it is an impressive and well built machine. The Thinkpad’s aren’t flashy looking like most of the other junk that is out there, and they are still a very nice looking laptop. Look at IBM’s website for a particular model number that meets your needs.

With all those requirements you should get a macbook.. With the macbook your able to run all mac app and windows app when you install xp/vista. Since your a student Mac also offers a cheaper price for college students and the can throw in a free printer and an iPod (a little extra)
but if your on a tight budget get an Hp dv6000 (15in) or the dv2000 (14.1in) the hp are very good computers.
I have an HP dv6140 and it has last me since 9 months so far.
Check out the Macbook though they really last longer then an PC
Hope this helps

Universities tend to overstate what is need by the students. IBM, Dell, HP and Toshiba all make reliable products that will last for years. The key is how you treat it and based upon your thoughtful description of your needs it sound like you would treat the laptop well. I’d figure out the budget, so you know how much you can spend. I’d also consider other features … size, weight, battery life, display size, etc. and add those to the feature you wish to have. Once you have done so and decide that Flight Simulator X needs to run on the laptop, then pick 2-3 models from the major manufacturer’s and start to compare them. Once you have done so you should have a laptop that will meet your needs for school.
